Worksop Old Market Square

Worksop Old Market Square

Project: Worksop Old Market Square
Client: Bassetlaw District Council
Contractor: GF Tomlinson
Project Manager: Mace Group
Landscape Architect: Gillespies LLP
Structural Design: Morgan Tucker

As part of its town centre improvement strategy, Bassetlaw District Council commissioned the redevelopment of Worksop’s former market square.

The high spec Public Realm scheme, designed to be a modern and simple community and leisure area, saw the implementation of new street furniture, steps and terracing and new lighting, along with improvements to highways, pavement and pedestrian links.

The square was renamed “Old Market Square” by the local residents after hundreds of Worksop Guardian readers had their say and voted. The name was unveiled at a special May Day Festival.

The aim of the regeneration was to create a robust, simple yet contemporary design to compliment both the new cinema development and the Town Hall area.

The bespoke parapet guardrails were fitted outside the cinema with handrail sections for the stepped area. The steel ¾ railings finished to RAL 7011 grey were fitted with a domed timber tops. The railings were designed and manufactured to comply with BS7818 3C (specification for pedestrian restraint systems in metal).

Zenith litter bins, Zenith bollards and Fin cycle stands were also supplied as part of the scheme. The Zenith bins and bollards were constructed from steel and coated to RAL 7011 grey to coordinate with the railings. The Fin 480 cycle stands were supplied in steel with a galvanised finish.

Simon Hall, Landscape Architect, Gillespies: “Having specified Furnitubes cycle stands, bollards and bins for the public realm refurbishment of Worksop Old Market Square, Nottinghamshire, we approached them with our requirements for simple, contemporary bespoke railings with timber handrails for outside the cinema. As they were to run along a pedestrian walkway with a drop to 3m on the other side, it was imperative the railings conformed to BS7818 3C, whilst still meeting the elegant appearance required. Furnitubes worked closely with our team, to deliver on this brief. The bespoke railings are slimline considering the structural requirements and look great, lifted by the introduction of timber. I am happy with the end result and would work with Furnitubes again.”
