Xscape, Glasgow

1 May 2009

Architect: FaulkenerBrowns
Contractor: Laing O’Rourke
Type of works: fabrication of bespoke secret-fix soffits and cassette rainscreen system for 'picture frame' feature.

Xscape is Scotland’s first indoor ski dome and the third of its type in the UK. It has a unique and challenging design that has attracted interest from far and wide.

The 375,000m2, £70m building at Braehead, near Glasgow features a 200m long ski slope and also includes a cinema, retail outlets and restaurants.

A major design feature is the Purple ‘picture frame’ set into the side elevation fabricated by Sotech as special soffits (using interlocking wall planks) and which incorporate a unique secret-fix system. Optima® cassette rainscreen is used for the sides of the ‘picture frame’.

A special three-coat paint system was used on the 2,000m2 of pre-coated PvDF aluminium to match the Xscape corporate colours.
