Type of works: safety and homogeneous vinyl flooring installed at eco-friendly primary school.

A variety of safety and homogeneous sheet vinyl from commercial flooring specialist Polyflor has been installed at the eco-friendly Ysgol Y Graig primary school, recently relocated in Llangefni, Anglesey. With environmental performance high on the school’s design agenda, floor finishes with low environmental impact were chosen in order to contribute to a healthy BREEAM (Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method) score. All chosen Polyflor vinyl achieves a BRE A rating, the highest environmental profile available for certified products.

The £3.7m project, capable of generating its own electricity with a possible surplus to sell on to the National Grid, boasts a range of energy saving features including solar roof tiles, a wind turbine and a “green roof” to provide a natural habitat for plants and insects.

The school is of a sustainable timber structure and was built by Wynne Construction in partnership with Anglesey County Council.

“In keeping with the eco-friendly nature of the project we selected furnishings, including floorcoverings, which are environmentally suitable,” says Anglesey County Council design manager Marcus Groves. “The very low maintenance Polysafe Corona and Polysafe Astral safety floors, fitted in school corridors and toilets, achieve significant savings in maintenance costs and reduce the use of chemical cleaners. Polyflor XL PU, the heavy duty vinyl used in the storage areas also provides significant low maintenance benefits. Importantly, all ranges also achieve the top environmental rating of A from the BRE.”

Slip-resistant Polysafe Corona and Polysafe Astral are both BRE A rated products that combine the latest advanced performance and maintenance technology with superbly fresh colour palettes. Both incorporate Supratec+, the second generation of Polyflor’s unique soil releasing polymer system, including polyurethane for reduced dirt pick up and even easier maintenance. This means that the products can offer life cycle cleaning cost savings of up to 60% when compared against traditional safety flooring over a 15 year period.

In addition to meeting the performance requirements of EN 13845 and being BBA Agrément certified as G5ws, Corona and Astral provide sustainable slip-resistance throughout their guaranteed life, achieving ≥36 on the RRL Pendulum wet test (Four-S/Slider 96 rubber). This, combined with a surface roughness of Rz ≥20µm, ensures that they comply with Health and Safety Executive guidance and with EN 13845, the European Norm for Safety Flooring.

Polyflor XL PU features a specially formulated polyurethane surface treatment, reducing maintenance costs by up to 24% and improving the soil resistance and cleanability of the floor. To suit differing traffic levels, XL PU offers a choice of 1.5mm or 2mm gauges, with an extensive colour palette to suit numerous design schemes.

In common with all Polyflor’s homogeneous vinyl floorcoverings and a number of Polysafe ranges, all flooring used in the school is certified through BRE Certification Ltd for its environmental profile. And when the Ecopoints measured and reported in the certification are compared to BRE’s Green Guide to Specification, a top A rating is achieved. This is based on an assessment on the whole life environmental impact of the flooring over a building life of 60 years.

In addition, all three products, installed at the school by Caernarfon-based flooring contractor Ross Hughes Flooring, have been independently assessed by the British Board of Agrément and product performance is assured for at least 10 years in recommended use areas. With proper maintenance, the appearance and colour will be retained during this period.

Fully tested to fire safety standard EN 13501-1, all three products are certified as Class Bfl-S1, achieving the criteria EN ISO 9239-1 ≥8kw/m2 and the mandatory requirement of EN ISO 11925-2 pass.
