Amokabel Flexishield – Supporting the shift to greater safety standards

Amokabel Flexishield Ltd are a UK-based cable manufacturer specializing in fixed wiring cables for commercial and industrial buildings. From their factory in Mansfield, Nottinghamshire, Amokabel innovates to produce products that support enhanced industry standards and the safer, smarter construction and retrofitting of buildings and infrastructure within commercial and industrial settings.

Flexishield is Amokabel’s main product range, a low voltage, multicore, screened BS 8436 fail-safe cable, designed for power and lighting circuits where cables are concealed within partitions and building voids at a depth of less than 50mm.

Flexipower, another product range, is a 90°C rated BASEC approved unscreened, flexible fixed wiring cable, allowing easier installation onto cable trays and baskets, used as a replacement for traditional twin and earth and other fixed power cables.

Since 2010, Amokabel has been supplying modular wiring companies with various wiring sub-assemblies built to customer specifications, including extenders and home run cable types, generally used within flexible metal conduit or metal trunking installations.

Flexishield – BS8436

Flexishield’s main feature is its ability to fail safe when penetrated by a sharp metallic object, designed to fail safe at 200 amps under nail penetration conditions, surpassing the requirements of BS8436.

Flexishield is a cost-effective solution to meet the 18th Edition of The Wiring Regulations BS 7671:2018 for concealed cables at a depth of less than 50mm, Regulations 522.6.201 to 522.6.204. It uses a bonded aluminium tape for excellent mechanical protection and also acts as an effective screen to reduce electrical interference.

Flexishield features a Low Smoke Halogen Free sheath, reducing toxic smoke production, and carries a CPR rating of Dca in its standard form. The sheath is also UV stable and weather-resistant, making it suitable for internal and external applications, in commercial and industrial projects and is useful in heat pump and air conditioning installations.

Flexishield ensures quick and easy installation for electrical contractors, with built-in safety. Benefits over traditional installations include up to a 40% reduction in installation time over SWA, being 60% lighter than traditional small armoured cables, and using 20% less space.

Flexishield comes in a range of 1.5 to 4.0mm² to BS 8436 300/500v and 6.0mm² to IS 273 600/1000v, with class 2 stranded conductors of 2, 3, and 4 cores and a tinned CPC of equal cross-sectional area. It is also available in 10.0mm² manufactured to IS 273 600/1000v standards.

Amokabel Launches First BS8436 CPR Rated Cca Flexishield Cable

In June 2025, Amokabel announced the release of a new Construction Products Regulation (CPR) fire performance Cca-rated version of its BS 8436 Flexishield cable, Flexishield-Cca®, aligning with the UK’s tightening fire safety regulations. This development comes as the UK government accelerates the implementation of the 58 recommendations from the Grenfell Tower Inquiry Phase 2 report.

What Cca-Rated Means and Why It Matters

Under the BS EN 13501-6 classification system, a Cca rating indicates that a cable has a limited contribution to fire, with low smoke production and minimal flaming droplets. This is a significant upgrade from lower-rated cables, which are more prone to spreading fire and producing toxic smoke.

Amokabel’s new Flexishield-Cca® variant meets this higher standard, making it the first Cca rated, shielded fail-safe BS 8436 compliant cable suitable for use in higher-risk applications such as escape routes, high-rise residential buildings, public buildings, hospitals, and schools.

Future Applications and Industry Trends

The introduction of Flexishield-Cca® positions Amokabel Flexishield to meet growing demand in several emerging areas related to increased fire safety:

• Retrofitting of existing high-risk buildings, especially those undergoing remediation under the government’s Remediation Acceleration Plan.
• New builds subject to Gateway 2 approvals, where fire strategy documentation and material compliance are under stricter scrutiny.
• Infrastructure projects requiring compliance with updated CE marking and European fire safety standards.
