Planning complex rooftop projects: lessons from King’s College Hospital
Refurbishing an existing rooftop rarely means working with a clear, empty surface. Services, drainage, maintenance access and fire requirements all have to be considered, while the conditions found on site may not match the original drawings.
At King’s College Hospital in Camberwell, a previously unused 170-square-metre roof has been transformed into an outdoor extension of the hospital’s Critical Care Unit. Critically ill patients can now spend time outside while remaining connected to essential medical equipment.

Wallbarn became involved through our partner AB Building Products, providing technical and design support for the decking substructure. Specialist installer ISW UK Ltd was later brought into the project and recommended that the roof was fully surveyed before materials were ordered.
That survey identified differences between the earlier drawings and the actual site conditions, including measurement variances and build-up tolerances. Wallbarn then revised the layouts, recalculated quantities and reissued the quotation using the confirmed dimensions.

The design also had to work around extensive medical infrastructure beneath the finished deck, including medical gases, power, data and monitoring equipment. These services needed to remain operational and accessible after installation, with access incorporated into the finished system.
There was considerably more involved in the project than the finished rooftop suggests. The full case study looks at how Wallbarn, ISW and the wider project team remeasured, redesigned and coordinated the system around the hospital’s services, access requirements and site constraints.
