8 new Cycle Hubs were installed for South West Trains Network

Cyclepods have designed and built 8 new Cycle Hubs across the South West Trains Networks as part of their Cycle-Rail integration project.

Working in partnership with the Department for Transport, the local authorities and the Rail Delivery Group, this is Cyclepods biggest project to date. A total of 1,162 bike storage spaces have been provided across the new hubs.

They were all built with galvanised and powder coated steel structure and different combinations of glass, Kalzip, and wooden cladding. All cladding has been manufactured to meet the EU standards.

The steel structure consists of 80 x 80mm box section columns with 100 x 100mm roof beams. The glass cladding was 12mm thick, thermally toughened and laminated to give a higher resistance to crash penetration and splintering.

The wooden cladding was Western Red Cedar, which is commonly used for architectural cladding thanks to its long-life span and durability. The cedar is sustainably sourced in Canada where for every one tree that’s cut down, another three are planted in its place.

The addition of a green roof was implemented at Ewell West for both aesthetic and conservation reasons to help it blend into the local environment.

The Hubs storage provided a two-tier system, CapaCITY. The CapaCITY is a Dutch rack and the design is optimised for ease of use and bike protection, as well as providing a space saving solution to bike storage.

As standard, all the hubs came equipped with bike pumps and repair stands, providing a facility for cyclists to carry out minor repairs and maintenance. Customer information screens which display real-time weather information and train timetabling were also installed, as well as specific lights and CCTV cameras to ensure a secure and inviting environment.
