The Abbey Wharf development, an affordable homes development that is helping transform Alperton in north-west London, has transformed a disused industrial site into 136 new homes. BA Systems were awarded the balustrade package by Inland Homes following working with them at early design stages to establish their needs.
Following early-stage pre-contract design discussions, BA System were contracted by Inland Homes to supply and install the balustrade package to the external balconies. Their design team engaged heavily with Inland to finally propose their B50 fascia mounted 50 x 12mm vertical flat bars to 136 external balconies, a total of 1155 linear metres of balustrading. The Vertical Bar balustrade is modular and lightweight, therefore well suited for this residential development.
The mechanical connection between the components negates the need to have the traditional welding. This provided a very aesthetic solution to the balconies which was well received by the client.
BA Systems adapted the design to create a soffit return which covered the first fix bracketery, providing a quality finish and view from below the balconies.
The B50 system is a product that can be manufactured on a just in time basis as it is produced quite quickly compared to conventional mild steel construction, which consists of lots of welding, therefore a timely process. The advantage of this system meant that they were able to complete the balustrade package ahead of schedule!
