Lumen rooflights were the ideal choice for the owners of a Grade II listed property in the heart of the seaside town of Deal in Kent.

The 18th Century terraced home contains an in impressive inglenook fireplace, exposed brickwork and timber beams, salvaged locally from the many shipwrecks which litter the Kentish coastline. As is often the case with this style of property, one of the main challenges is how to maximise the light entering the building.

The kitchen area has been opened up at one end with full width doors, which open out into a small, walled courtyard garden. It is the rooflights, however, which add the extra light and feeling of space.

Lumen designed a stunning bespoke conservation rooflight, which spans almost the entire length and width of the new extension (2400mm x 1200mm) letting in the maximum amount of light possible. Due to the house being located within a stones’ throw from the sea front, the rooflight was manufactured in stainless steel, with a coastal paint applied to protect it from the harsh environmental conditions.

In terms of the design, the rooflights needed to be on a low pitched roof and have a low profile due to their positioning within a Conservation Area. It was also important that the character of the rooflight fitted in well with the rest of the building, especially the existing bespoke slim metal framed patio doors. Lumen designed the rooflights to sit on a shallow upstand to keep the slim profile.

The rooflight bring is much more light and has as much clear viewable glass as possible, with very little metal frame visible. The bespoke Conservation rooflight proved to be the ideal choice.
