Boon Edam security products help to modernise refurbished office space

London is a vibrant, busy and beautiful city, boasting constant innovation and unique architecture. Now, developments have become bigger and more competitive year on year. With expectations on office workspaces becoming increasingly more open and flexible, the requirement for integrated security has become a complex task.

This led to the existing building of 10 Queen Street Place having a much-needed refurbishment following the trend of open atriums, flexible floorspace and usable rooftop space.

Within this project, the interior and exterior were dramatically changed and enhanced utilising fresh entry and security solutions.

Located next to Southwark Bridge and a couple minutes’ walk from the bustling area of Cannon Street Station is Riverscape.

Originally opened back in 1980, the multi-storey office space was a modern development that sat on the sought-after area of the River Thames. This project was refurbished from top to bottom, with the original Boon Edam entrance solutions being upgraded to newer more innovative products.

The lead architect was Aukett Swanke with interior designers Barr Gazetas leading the design of the refurbishment and, main contractors being Overbury.

Working for this project years prior in relation to the old security lanes and revolving doors that were installed by Boon Edam, the London Sales team knew the building and requirements needed. It’s common to see dated installations be retrofitted with newer security products that modernise the look and feel of an entrance as well as upgrade the technology associated with them.

One of the requirements was to replace the existing Speedlane 900s that were located in the atrium space with the new Lifeline Speedlane Swings. Being the slimmest security lane in the market, the Lifeline Swings have increased in popularity, offering a high level of security yet being customisable aesthetically.

The second requirement was to replace the existing Tourniket doors with two new tall Crystal Tournikets. These new doors have curved glass walls, a glass soffit with dark PPC frames to match the full height glass façade.

During the installation phase, there was a product release of the Lifeline Boost. The Boost is a pedestal that has the ability to add extra access control functionality to existing security lanes such as bio-metric readings, card collections and bar-code scanning.

The reception desk works via a management system linked to the security lanes. Having remote access to the lanes via reception allows for those authorised to open and close the lanes from afar. The Lifeline Boost slots onto the ends of an intermediate lane.

Within this project, a bar-code scanner was installed into the Lifeline Boost by Bluepoint. This way visitors can have a temporary access card, that is collected and then reused.

Graham Coulter, the Field Service Sales Executive at Boon Edam Limited states: “The idea of bar-code scanners is so visitors can book in with reception, receive an entrance card and badge in and out through the lanes.

Working in collaboration with the London Team, the client had an already clear idea regarding the desired outcome of the new entrance. The UK team work through a process known as Boon Select. This process enables teams to generate, analyse and formulate the perfect entry scenario by going through seven key considerations.

Being able to map out considerations enables better, more sustainable decisions that in turn highlights all aspects of the entry requirements. Running through a process like Boon Select means that no stone is left unturned.

Throughput
There was a need to accommodate high peak flows of users especially at lunch, first thing in the morning and evening, whilst offering a high capacity solution to the control and authorisation of visitors using the security turnstiles.

Security
The need to detect the passage of unauthorised users of the security turnstile whilst ensuring the entrance remained inviting.

Safety
Security and throughput were important considerations but an installation that ensured the safety of users was paramount.

Aesthetics
The design of the refurbished entrance screen necessitated as minimal framing as possible coupled with a desire to increase the glazed revolving door elements as high as possible. The design of security turnstiles had to be a slim and unobtrusive as possible, with finishes that complimented the design of the atrium.

Technology
The Lifeline Swing’s had to be able to integrate a variety of 3rd party components in the most seamless possible way.

Comfort
It was a requirement that users found the Security Turnstiles were as intuitive as possible and this was delivered via the unique Lifeline LED system.

Service
With a truly nationwide network of experienced highly skilled, directly employed, service technicians Boon Edam were able to reassure the client that any issues could quickly be resolved.
