A high profile historic project demands the services of a trusted partner. With a proven track record of supplying high quality materials in silos, Larsen selected CEMEX to supply all 750 tonnes of bedding mortar for a prestigious project in Leicester.

This £4m scheme was designed to provide an attractive new gateway to the city’s Cathedral Quarter and the site of the discovered remains of Richard III. The project was commissioned by Leicester City Council as part of Connecting Leicester – a major programme of work to improve pedestrian links between Leicester’s historic buildings and heritage sites and the modern heart of the city.

Hard on the heels of the Jubilee Square project followed a £2m public realm scheme contract for the Cathedral Gardens.

The historic connections of the Cathedral’s original 13th Century establishment as an Abbey Church and the discovery of the remains of England’s last Plantagenet King meant that the project had to be carried out under an Archaeological Watching Brief by the University of Leicester’s Archaeology Department, especially during initial excavations for drainage channels. This brought an extra dimension of interest to the project.

The whole ethos for both projects was one of quality of design and finish and this is reflected in the selection of materials for paving and installations. The high quality of the design and specification for both projects was fully in keeping with the location, using a mixture of modern materials and concepts, but with a respect for the Cathedral and ancient Royal connections.
