CEMEX provides an innovative solution for BMW’s new PDI facility

CEMEX Paving Solutions were approached by Able UK to bid for the asphalt surfacing of a large storage area within their facility at Killingholme in North Lincolnshire. This was a fundamental part of a scheme to build a PDI Facility for BMW to process their new cars as they arrived in the UK.

By gaining a thorough understanding of the client’s needs from the outset, CEMEX were able to provide an innovative, value engineered alternative solution to the one specified.

Able UK historically have only used asphalt in their car storage areas as traditional concrete has never been a viable option due to the high costs and lengthy installation and curing times.

This project had a challenging programme with the client keen to start using the facility as soon as possible. Drawing on the years of knowledge and experience in this field, the CEMEX Commercial and Technical teams were tasked to come up with a solution that met with the client’s needs both technically and financially. Consideration also had to be given to the location of the scheme, as it was not ideally placed for the raw material supply, with the nearest crushed rock quarry being in Derbyshire, some 80 miles away.

The solution came in the form of CEM-Pave Roller Compacted Concrete. This material offers the strength and durability normally associated with concrete, with the speed of installation of asphalt. With curing times being drastically reduced to a few days, Able UK would be in a position to utilise the completed areas quickly without risk of deformation, accelerating the program and meeting the end-client’s needs.

CEMEX quickly established one of their Rapid Mix on- site batching plants, giving complete exclusivity, enabling high outputs and optimised logistics between the mixing and paving operations. As the project progressed, a second mobile batch plant was deployed to site, giving the paving operation around 2,000 tonnes a day of CEM-Pave RCC to lay, the equivalent of 104 concrete mixer loads of traditional concrete.

In order to deliver the project on time, CEMEX enlisted the help of their internal supply chain colleagues to co- ordinate the movement of around 83,000 tonnes of aggregate by both road and rail from Dove Holes Quarry, along with nearly 13,000 tonnes of Cement from their South Ferriby works, all in close collaboration with Able UK.

The project was considered a huge success and the end-client, BMW, have moved onto their new parking area, quickly filling the spaces as released to them by Able UK.

Despite the challenges of the UK weather, CEMEX were able to handover the project a few weeks ahead of the planned schedule, leaving BMW & Able UK with a strong and durable running surface which will serve them well for years to come.
