Closing Cavity Walls

Closing Cavity Walls

Closing cavity walls has been made easier. A new 2009 manual: ‘Closing Cavity Walls’ published by Cavity Trays of Yeovil, has just been released.

The manual contains new and improved methods of closing cavity walls at floor, intermediate and roof level, as well as around window and door openings. The range of closers (caviclosers) has been extended, with new designs that address a wider range of construction methods and applications.

The traditional cavity wall comprises the greater part of the building envelope. It is punctuated regularly by window or door openings, and such openings must be formed in a manner in which all regulation demands of structural reveal closing, damp-proofing, thermal insulation, fire (stop) integrity and acoustic transmission suppression are addressed. Similarly specific closing methods can be required at other levels in the building envelope, from ground level to roof level. The new manual ‘Closing Cavity Walls’ shows how to identify the appropriate cavicloser to optimise construction and achieve easy compliance of the Building Regulations.

Each product page contains data listing the thermal qualities of the design and composite thermal values when installed within compliant construction applications. The specifier is able to select the most appropriate closer for the type of construction, ranging from timber frame to traditional masonry, with cavity widths extending up to 200mm.

Straight and checked reveals are addressed, whilst some closers intended for timber frame construction benefit thermal expansion and contraction movement provision within their design. A maximum fire rating of four hours is available in some ranges, many of which additionally suppress acoustic flanking transmission. All closers act as a dpc and are designed to arrest dampness from permeating inwardly.

The new A4 colour manual is available free of charge to industry disciplines.
