Colorcoat delivers for UK’s most eco-friendly distribution warehouse

This state-of-the-art distribution warehouse in Newcastle Under Lyme isn’t just green on the outside thanks to the use of Colorcoat Prisma® and Colorcoat HPS200 Ultra® pre-finished steel , the whole building is so environmentally-friendly it’s one of the most sustainable buildings in the UK.

First in the UK to achieve ‘Outstanding’ BREEAM status
The G.Park Blue Planet warehouse, part of the Chatterley Valley regeneration scheme, is the first in the UK to achieve ‘Outstanding’ BREEAM status. The award – the highest environmental accolade in building development – was secured when G.Park Blue Planet was only at design stage.

Now completed, the 382,810sq foot warehouse and offices built by global sustainable logistics provider Gazeley is the UK’s first carbon-positive logistics development, complete with its own biomass power station which exports enough energy to heat and power 3,100 homes.

The pinnacle of sustainable buildings
100 per cent of the heat and energy for the building comes from renewable sources, the development also features solar panel walls, under floor heating, thermal insulation and energy-efficient lighting to maximise its environmental credentials.

Naturally, the materials used to clad the cutting-edge warehouse also had to be sustainable, as well as durable. In addition to the cost advantages of a longer lasting cladding system, the durability of Colorcoat® products also enhance the building’s sustainability credentials. The Products are covered by the market leading Confidex® guarantee with no requirement for annual inspection or maintenance, meaning that emissions during the life of the building are minimised, avoiding any additional emissions that can be generated by in-service maintenance and repair or replacement.

Colorcoat HPS200 Ultra® and Colorcoat Prisma® are the first pre-finished steel products to achieve BES 6001 certification for Responsible Sourcing, going beyond compulsory requirements to achieve a ‘Very Good’ standard.

Graduating shades of green steel cladding
The roof and walls were clad, in graduating shades of green reflecting the environmental ethos of the development. Using the Colorcoat® Repertoire® Colour consultancy service – where virtually any colour can be created from a simple swatch and reproduced as pre-finished steel cladding – ensured the correct shades of green were produced for the striking scheme.

nThis building already exceeds the Government’s Climate Change Act targets for 2020 and 2050
So successful is the development that it has won a string of awards since its launch, including a ‘Best Sustainable Development’ LEAF Award, Overall Winner at the North Staffordshire Urban Design Awards, an IAS Green Award and the Midlands Property Awards Sustainability Prize.

So advanced is the environmental technology used, the building already exceeds the Government’s Climate Change Act targets for 2020 and 2050. And thanks to Colorcoat® pre-finished steel, the building will be as green in the future as it is today.
