Executive washrooms, custom-designed and manufactured by Maxwood have been installed at a commercial redevelopment on London’s Chancery Lane.
The supply and fit package for the prestigious project combines the clean lines of Maxwood’s flush-fronted Maranté cubicle system and counter-top wash basins with the natural beauty of mosaic glass tiling and Caithness slate vanity tops.
Maxwood built a prototype washroom in its factory to allow property investors and regenerators Derwent London plc an opportunity to view and discuss design detailing before work commenced on site.
“We have a design-led philosophy and the prototype was an essential element of the Chancery Lane redevelopment,” says Derwent London Development Manager, Benjamin Lesser. “Maxwood really put themselves forward to meet the challenges of the project. Our whole experience of working with them was excellent,”
The redevelopment of 40 Chancery Lane involved demolition of all bar one of the buildings on the site to make way for a modern, energy-efficient office building, clad with a glass and stone façade; the Tooks Court building still remains. The completed building, designed by Bennetts Associates Architects, provides approximately 100,000 sq ft of contemporary workspace, including male, female and disabled access washrooms by Maxwood to six floors and basement area.
Doors to the Maranté toilet cubicles are faced with a fashionable ‘Lati Silk’ dark grey real wood veneer, which is complemented by Maxwood’s stainless steel hardware range featuring concealed fixings and fall-to-close hinges. Bins are concealed within bespoke cupboard units with painted MDF doors on soft-close hinges.
Vanity tops for the new washrooms at Chancery Lane were produced from Caithness Flagstone, a beautiful and highly durable material; created over 400 million years ago and only found in the far north of Scotland, Caithness Flagstone is one of the most versatile slates on the market.
The washrooms’ sleek, light styling is enhanced by the clever use of ‘Ice-stix’ glass tiling to rear vanity walls and as a panel facing for the Maxwall ducting units for WCs. The Maxwall panels for the urinals were faced in back-painted glass with urinal divider screens from back-to-back glass with a white interlayer.
Made-to-measure for each installation, Maxwall systems were tiled in Maxwood’s factory and delivered to site in ready-assembled modular frames to be installed within stud-wall cavities or surface mounted with a box frame unit.
At Chancery Lane, top panels to urinals and mid panels to WCs are fitted with neat, concealed hinges, custom designed by Maxwood to enable quick access to the service duct.
To ensure the smooth running of the project Maxwood’s design drawings were used to co-ordinate all the washroom trades and Maxwood’s installation team worked closely with the project’s main contractor, Morgan Sindall.
