Sizewell B (Dry Fuel Store) A new ‘dry store’ was commissioned by EDF Energy to enable continued operation of the Sizewell B nuclear power plant until at least 2035.
The Suffolk plant accounts for 3% of the UK’s total electricity demand. A dry fuel store is a method of storing used nuclear fuel that has already been cooled in the used fuel pond.
Previously, the used fuel from Sizewell B’s reactor was safely stored under water in a fuel storage pond, but this was never designed for the lifetime of the plant.
Manhole Covers Limited sourced from partners around the world in order to fulfil EDF Energy’s high specification requirement.
The F900 (90 Tonnes) loading cable passage pit covers had to incorporate a secondary cover and needed to be watertight, whilst providing for cable access, high security key locking, three advanced seals and a special powder coating.
Once the final design was agreed it was submitted for approval to EDF Energy’s own testing team in Florida, USA.
148 No covers were successfully supplied to this specification.
