London looks on track to potentially see 60 tall buildings completed in 2019 – exciting news despite uncertain times for the UK. With London’s population set to increase to 11m by 2050 tall buildings are fast becoming the solution.

Looking at patterns over the last 2 years, in 2018 there was an increase of 6% of tall buildings in the planning pipeline compared with 2017 and planning permissions increased by just over 14%.

With London’s population set to increase to 11m by 2050 tall buildings are fast becoming the solution.

Overall the level of construction activity for tall buildings increased last year. 121 tall buildings were under construction which is an increase of just over 5% in 2017.

Further analysis has indicated that tall buildings are taking longer to complete. This can be for multiple reasons, such as skills shortages, changing project delivery timescales and financial viability issues. In other cases, over-optimistic predictions can play a role in increasing the number of expected completions in a certain year.

Ross Verity, Director at ForceDry said: “Tall buildings are hugely complex projects with so many variables, delays are frustrating and inevitable. The construction industry faces big challenges and delays only add to these.”

“It’s interesting when we look back at trends like this. We’ve seen a big uptake in tall building projects we are involved in as the industry is looking for ways to insure against delays and gain time on a build.”
