Composition and manufacture
FireSmart® membranes are formulated using finely-ground volcanic silicone rock, which has withstood temperatures in excess of 5,000°C. When in contact with flames, an endothermic reaction occurs, where heat is drawn from the flame to support a carbonisation process in the cap sheet, which reduces the burn temperature and seals off combustible material beneath. The weakening flame is thus cut off from further fuel, preventing further combustion.
Effect of fire
FireSmart® exceeds BS 476-3 and has been tested to comply with EN 1187, the code for European harmonisation of fire testing on roofing systems. It has been tested at the Warrington Fire Research Centre to ensure it withstands greater flame intensity than that of typical vandalism, or of burning embers from adjacent buildings.
To ensure long-term performance, all FireSmart® systems must be installed by fully-trained contractors.
FireSmart® application equipment provides safe installation without the requirement of naked flames or boilers.
