Installing the largest FireMaster Concertina to date

Installing the largest FireMaster Concertina to date

It was important to DP Architects that the pedestrian flow of Paya Lebar Quarter Mall in Singapore, a £2 billion mixed use building, was as seamless as possible, and to do this they required the use of fire curtains.

To retain a free flow of pedestrians in the retail mall, DP Architects designed four-sided FireMaster Closed Concertina fire curtains on each of the floors around the escalator wells to offer the level of fire protection required.

The FireMaster Concertina was favoured by the architects due to the ‘no guide rails’ feature, meaning the escalator well areas and the surrounding concourses remained open plan and free from obtrusive side guides required on traditional vertical fire curtains.

There is a total of eight FireMaster Closed Concertina fire curtains installed with two curtains on four floors around the escalators on levels 1, 2, 3 and 4. All of the Concertina fire curtains were rectangular in shape ranging from 3.5 metre to 4 metre drops. The largest curtain was 31 metres long by 6.2 metres wide.

By utilising the FireMaster Concertina meant it would provide the building with an approved, non-invasive means of fire protection that would satisfy the fire regulations as well as ensuring that the open plan design remained as intended allowing for the free flow of pedestrians.

Key benefits included:

• Every Concertina is bespoke and is manufactured to meet specific requirements.
• No corner posts and columns means there is no longer the need for side guides to compromise design.
• Manufactured by Coopers Fire in the UK under ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 systems.
