Kingspan Insulated Panels awarded prestigious Carbon Trust Standard

Kingspan Insulated Panels (Kingspan Ltd) has continually been at the forefront of industry initiatives to minimise carbon emissions and energy usage, and is currently working towards net zero energy. These efforts have now been officially recognised with the company being the first manufacturer of insulated metal cladding systems to be certified to the prestigious Carbon Trust Standard.

The Carbon Trust Standard is designed to provide a robust, objective analysis of a company’s carbon performance over a number of years. Organisations must be able to display both annual reductions in energy usage over a period of three years and prove that they have the necessary management procedures, plans and targets to continue to achieve further year-on-year carbon reductions in the future.

Kingspan Insulated Panels has undertaken a range of measures to reduce its environmental footprint at its UK sites in recent years. These include transforming the Holywell facility into a zero waste to landfill site and installing a 2900m2 Kingspan PowerPanel PV array on the roof alongside a host of energy efficiency improvements at all sites.

Employee involvement is another key aspect to the efforts to reduce energy consumption, with procedures in place to ensure all Kingspan staff are fully briefed on, and follow, the company’s Environmental Management System and Environmental Policy. Additional everyday green practice is also encouraged through guidelines on issues such as reducing energy consumption. These measures have allowed Kingspan Insulated Panels to reduce their carbon footprint relative to turnover by 11.9% over the previous 3 years.

Plans to further reduce carbon emissions are ongoing, with an application to construct two large wind turbines at the Holywell site currently at the planning stage. The measures all form part of Kingspan Group’s wider overall aim of achieving Net-Zero Energy across all Group facilities by 2020.

The Standard will provide a platform and catalyst for our renewed efforts to save energy in the short term and forms part of our long term goal of achieving net-zero energy at all Kingspan sites. The key lesson from this process for us is that energy saving provides financial savings that go straight to the bottom line – the business case is very strong with the bonus that the environment benefits from reduced carbon emissions.”
