What was the project brief?
Laurus Cheadle Hulme in Cheadle Hulme wanted a large dining shelter to reduce pressure on its other facilities during break times and give its outdoor areas a significant boost. It had to be impressive and offer real appeal to potential and current students, as well as keep out all kinds of British weather and work with the existing architecture and expanse of green spaces. The vision was a new area where children would love to spend time outdoors throughout the year. The staff got in touch with A&S Landscape and they quickly got to work on their canopy.
What was their dining canopy solution?
Following talks about what they wanted from the shelter and the options they could consider, Laurus Cheadle Hulme selected their Motiva Duo™. This was an excellent choice as it’s ideal for outdoor dining areas – as well as many other applications like playground shelters – and its attractive, symmetric curved roof had the ‘wow’ factor the school was looking for. They built the canopy to measure a massive 40000mm X 10000mm, making it one of their largest Motiva Duo™ models ever! This meant there was more than enough space at break times for students and teachers alike to eat lunch, talk with friends, or relax with some music. The rain now wouldn’t stop anyone from enjoying this time outside, thanks to the genuine, Opal polycarbonate roofing which they installed along with Basalt Grey steelwork. The design complemented the buildings and didn’t detract from the open spaces, while also undeniably forming an impressive structure within itself.
What was the result of the new shelter?
Everyone at Laurus Cheadle Hulme thinks the world of the dining canopy. Breaks now aren’t so hectic and crowded, as the new space has opened up options for where the children can spend them. The shelter has hugely improved the outdoor facilities and potential attendees will surely see it as a great asset – somewhere they’re guaranteed to get some fresh air between lessons, even if the weather isn’t up to scratch. Its size lends it well to other uses too, such as an outdoor classroom shelter or relaxation area. A&S Landscape found it really exciting to put together such an expansive project and hope that many years of students will reap the benefits of the new area.
“The team have been very efficient and equally professional and friendly. Nothing has been too much trouble for them and they have been a pleasure to work with. I can’t praise A&S Landscape enough. Thanks also to the office team for their excellent support and communication.” - Laurus Cheadle Hulme

About the client
Laurus Cheadle Hulme is a secondary school that opened in 2018. It is part of the Laurus Trust, a Multi-Academy Trust which has the founding institution, Cheadle Hulme High School, at its centre. The Trust describes the latter as being an outstanding and hugely oversubscribed academy. It places a strong emphasis on students developing powerful knowledge, having high ambitions – which can have an impact on their grades – and always striving for excellence. They admired how the staff were so clearly dedicated to educating young minds and A&S Landscape hope their canopy will play a part in their positive experiences at this institution.
Laurus Cheadle Hulme is based in Cheadle Hulme, a suburb in Stockport, Greater Manchester.
