Maximising the desirability of a property for sale was a major reason behind the installation of a state-of-the-art AMX home-control system in a newly-refurbished £10.5 million, four-storey Victorian house in London. To maximise the appeal of this luxurious home to prospective purchasers, the developer commissioned London-based specialist installers, SMC, to design and install the control system.

From a single touch, this system allows the new occupants to control almost every aspect of their living environment from wherever they are in the building, including selecting and setting heating, air-conditioning systems, control lighting, opening and closing electric blinds and cutains, and even calling up music or films fropm a central media server. This server is capable of holding thousands of CDs and hundreds of DVDs for instant playback to any room in the home.

The hand-held AMX touch-screen panel used to control the individual devices in the home, is also programmed with a number of bespoke one-touch commands, such as simultaneously turning on a plasma-screen TV and starting up a DVD. Similarly, pressing a leave command turns out all the lights in the home, apart from a lit pathway to the front door, allowing the owner time to leave. These lights are turned off after a ten minute delay.

SMC also programmed in a temporary estate agent demonstration. This system turns on waterproof TV screens in the master bathroom and jacuzzi, and selects and plays CDs through speakers concealed in the walls of the entrance hallway. These speakers are built into the walls and scrimmed over with plaster so as to maintain the period appearance of the property. the demonstration aslo selects a lighting scene throughout the premises, with colour-change lighting on the main stairs.

Downstairs, a media room/home cinema is equipped with surround-sound speakers, a plasma screen, projector, and the digital media server, providing the entire premises with audio and video distribution. Main access to the property is via a front door and rear mews garage, with a double car lift. A video entry system and keyless door locks provide secure entry to the home. CCTV cameras are positioned at the front and rear of the premises, and are wired to display images on the main plasma display in the media room.
