Mapei installed a decorative floor system at Gloucester Services, which has been named as a 2016 RIBA National award winner.

The environmentally-friendly service station on the edge of the Cotswolds has been heralded as ‘Britain’s greenest motorway services’ and was delivered by AFL Architects.

Three individual Mapei products were specified, alongside porcelain tiles and vinyl sheeting, throughout a 1,236m2 area of the service station. All floor works were carried out by Polished Concrete Designs for main contractor, Buckingham Group Contracting Ltd.

Within the main building, a screed incorporating Mapei’s fast drying hydraulic binder, Topcem was laid over insulation and underfloor heating.

Mapei’s two-component, solvent-free Primer SN was applied to provide a key for Mapei Ultratop - a decorative Anthracite-toned surface that gives the appearance of a polished concrete. The petrol station was also completed using Mapei Ultratop Anthracite.

RIBA call the services “a very deliberate refuge from motor travel” which has broken the mold of the traditional service station and made a significant contribution to architecture.
