Wates Living Space were contracted by the London Borough of Islington to demolish a number of outdated blocks of flats in Finsbury Park and build new on the existing site. One of the design requirements was to have external balconies to each of the flats.
The balcony design consisted of a circular tubular handrail with a mesh balustrade, all supported on posts fixed to a metal frame. On top of the frame sat a timber deck. The metalwork was galvanised and powder coated.
Metalcraft was awarded the contract to design, manufacture, deliver and fit 110 balconies to meet a very short programme. The fabrication of the sub frame was critical as the arms to hold the balcony in position had to exactly match pre-fitted brackets to which the balcony had to be bolted. They managed to achieve 100% accuracy by using a template system.
The balconies were fabricated and pre-assembled and lifted into position by crane and bolted to the buildings. Installation was carried out by our enthusiastic, experienced and highly qualified site teams under the supervision of a dedicated Project Manager.
