New office development with fire curtains neatly integrated with lifts

Forbury Place is a new £38 million set of office buildings in Reading constructed by Galliford Try for the client MG Real Estate and Bell Hammer.

Coopers Fire have worked with Galliford Try on numerous build projects and worked closely with them to ensure the fire curtains met the fire requirements and the building layout as designed by the architects Aukett Fitzroy Robinson.

There are six lifts available on ground floor to floor six and four lifts continue to the seventh floor. Fire curtains with smoke control were required over the individual lift openings.

Fire curtains with smoke control over a lift opening offer fire integrity, raditaion control and prevent smoke from spreading through the building via the lift shaft in the event of a fire on any of the building’s floors.

Coopers installed FireMaster Plus2 fire curtains over the lift door openings on each of the ground and upper seven floors and two on the basement so a total of fourty eight curtains. The FireMaster Plus2 fire curtain offers up to 90 minutes radiation control, which was a requirement for the fire curtain on this project.

"The fire curtains installed in the lift openings offer protection from the spread of fire and smoke over all floors and fit brilliantly with the design of the building and lift opening."

An important part of the design of the building on the ground and first floor was to subtly integrate the fire curtain headbox and side guides into the lift opening.

Bronze and stainless steel trim is a major feature in the lift lobby on the ground and first floors and Coopers were able to install matching stainless steel bottom tray and side guide trims to ensure the fire curtain is virtually invisible until deployed.

As a manufacturer and installer that is fully project managed meant Coopers were able to ensure the final, fitted product satisfied the high quality finish required and integrated with the lift opening as per the design requirements.

Coopers are Independently Third Party Certified for Product Testing and Installation. Coopers fire curtains are recognised as the modern alternative to firewalls, fire doors and glazing, giving designers the freedom to design modern, open plan spaces without compromising fire safety.

They are increasingly specified by designers as a solution for open plan designs. Coopers Fire is a turnkey business, offering the customer a product and service with full provenance. Coopers Fire designs, manufactures, tests, installs and maintains all its fire curtains from our business premises in Havant, Hampshire.
