One of the first installations of ACO’s new smaller Qmax® sizes been completed within a car park at Oxford Brookes University. The 22m run of Qmax® 225 slot drain prevents surface water ponding in a service car park on the University’s Harcourt Hill Campus, a location that had been prone to flooding and which, under heavy rainfall conditions, had led to water ingress into a number of adjacent lecture rooms.

The car park, which has space for approximately 12 vehicles, is situated close to the visually-sensitive main entrance to the campus and sees heavy pedestrian use throughout the course of a day. Its refurbishment called for the complete removal of the old point-gully drainage, and for it to be replaced with a visually unobtrusive, high-performance system that could be easily maintained and not pose a safety hazard for pedestrians.

Qmax® 225, one of two new smaller sizes of the award winning Qmax® slot drainage system recently launched by ACO, is designed for just such small to medium catchment areas. It has a circular bore of 225mm and is fitted with ACO’s patented Continuous Pavement Beam Inlet which allows an unbroken reinforced slab to be cast around and through the inlet, without breaking the line of the finished surface slot.

The slot itself, in this application the heelguard edge-rail option has been used, is just 10mm wide, removing any risk to pedestrians and minimising the visual impact on the finished surface and surroundings.

Contractor, Southern Construction & Surfacing Limited, completed the installation in one day, despite bad weather conditions and never having used the Qmax system before.

“The product was extremely easy to work with. Each 2m section is lightweight and, being straightforward to cut on site, we were quickly able to tie the new drainage line into the existing mains connection points,” says the Oxford Brookes University Estates Department spokesperson.

“The finish and performance is exactly what we were looking for and the straightforward and simple ongoing maintenance will ensure that we do not get any recurrence of the flooding problems.”

Qmax® 225 was launched alongside Qmax® 350, a slightly larger version that has a circular bore of 350mm. Both are manufactured in 2m lengths from lightweight, recycled Medium Density Polyethylene (MDPE), and are highly resistant to chemical corrosion. Safe to manually handle, both sizes can be easily and accurately cut at special cut-points that are moulded into each section at every 200mm. Each section is also fitted with a twin-lipped neoprene seal that provides a 100% seal, preventing any leakage or infiltration.

The 225 and 350 models carry the same features and options found the two established, larger models, Qmax® 900 and 600. There are two galvanised-steel inlet edge rail options: a 30mm slot concrete-edge rail for industrial applications and concrete slab installations, and the 10mm heelguard edge used in this project. All the Qmax® models are certified to carry loads up to Load Class F900 and are fully compatible with each other.
