A system approach by Hush Acoustics enables architects and contractors to upgrade sound insulation with confidence in the ceiling and floor constructions of listed and heritage buildings that are undergoing conversion or refurbishment.

The fully tested and approved HD1030: Hush-System LP is ideal for older buildings which feature lath and plaster ceilings as it provides a way of cutting sound transmission without the need to fit sound-blocking plasterboard over the existing ceiling. This enables original interior features and décor to be preserved and enhanced whilst ensuring the building can be brought up to significantly higher acoustic performance standards, including the building regulation requirements for conversions which fall under ‘Material Change of Use’.

The system is built up from the floor side. The cavities within the joists are filled with sound absorbing insulation Hush-Slab 100, which sits on Hush-Mesh Firewire to provide a one-hour fire resistance at joist level. Once the insulation slabs are in place, a 19mm plasterboard plank is fitted over the original floorboards or 18mm OSB deck, and Hush-Panel 28 panels are then laid over to create a floating floor. The potential for all sound transmission paths is minimised by completing the floor/ceiling construction with perimeter sealing using Hush-Seal 20.

Its acoustic performance can transform the sound insulation properties of separating floors, with ratings of 54 dB for impact (L’nT,w), 58 dB for airborne (DnT,w) and 50 dB for airborne (DnT,w + Ctr) (based on HD1030 and a minimum of 200mm deep joists and a full lath and plaster ceiling in good condition).
