Over 1000 m2 of Kingspan Insulated Panels products, including Polycarb Rooflights and Safetraxx height safety solution, have been installed on the latest project from Tustin Developments. Overseen by main contractors M A Young Construction, the six new commercial units on the Red Scar Business Park in Preston deliver high quality commercial space; designed to make maximum use of natural light.
Research has suggested that staff are both happier and more productive in naturally lit workplaces and Kingspan Polycarb Rooflights offer an ideal solution. Unlike standard GPR daylight systems, Kingspan Polycarb Rooflights feature UV resistant layers on both faces; this protects them against UV degradation which causes systems to go yellow and crack over time. As a result they can provide an excellent light transmission level of over 60% (NEN) EN 410: 1998 for much longer than many other daylight systems.
This improved long-term light transmission will also bring financial benefits to tenants by reducing the need for artificial lighting. The design from architects Eric Smith includes several other features to further increase energy savings, with the combination of highly insulated Kingspan KS1000 RW Roof Panels and Kingspan KS1000 MR Architectural Wall Panels, both achieving U-value performances of 0.16 W/m2.K and 0.21 W/m2.K respectively. Kingspan KS1000 RW and PowerPanel Roof Mounted (RM) PV system were also installed on the roof elevation to reduce energy consumption on site, along with the added benefit of receiving the Government Feed-in Tariff for 25 years. The total roof coverage was approximately 200 m² comprising of 100 modules.
Robert Connal from Valent Roofing, installers of all four Kingspan systems, commented: Kingspan products were used to deliver the entire building envelope on the project as they offered the most economical and energy saving solution, as required by the design specifications.
Several of the units have already been let as Tustin Developments Property Director, Paul Smith explained: The units have proved popular with prospective tenants; two of the six were pre-let and a further two taken up immediately on completion. No doubt the high specification influenced the tenants in their decision to commit to the building.
To enable a fast and safe installation of the Kingspan PowerPanel RM system, and to simplify its future maintenance, Kingspan Safetraxx height safety solution was also installed on the project by Harcon Services Ltd. Safetraxx provides an aesthetically pleasing solution for off-ridge height safety requirements. The system comprises an aluminium section with a precision sliding joint and is compliant with BS EN 795. Furthermore, as the system is fixed from the top down, it can be simply installed without the need for internal scaffolding and, because the fixings do not penetrate the insulation layer of the building envelope, it also eliminates thermal bridging.
Harcon Services Managing Director Paul Harvey commented: Kingspan Safetraxx was the ideal choice for the project as it allowed multiple workers access to the roof on both sides of the step in order to install the PowerPanel System. We have a great deal of experience installing Kingspan height safety solutions, including the new Kingspan Safepro2 System, and have found clients are always extremely pleased with both the speed and ease with which they can be fitted and used.
The newest member of Kingspan range of height safety solutions, Safepro2, features an innovative design combining high-strength stainless steel cable with energy absorbing anchors which limit the load transferred to roof panel to less than 6kN, far lower than other systems. This allows it to protect both the user and the roof in the event of a fall and means it can be fitted on any of Kingspan wide range of roof panels. The System is certified to BS EN 795 and can either be installed as a single point anchor allowing localised access to the roof, or as a continuous lifeline system allowing uninterrupted access across the whole roof.
