Safehinge: integrated finger protection

Safehinge: integrated finger protection

The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) estimates that 30,000 children trap and seriously injure their fingers in doors every year and more than 1,500 of these will require surgery.

Available from MB Architectural, Safehinge offers an elegant solution to this problem by eliminating the dangerous gap created by conventional hinges.

The ALU range achieves finger safety by integrating components with the door which allow the door to pivot without creating a gap at the hinge.

Safehinge ALU eliminates any opportunity for finger trappings to occur through use of a specialist pivot set and a curved aluminium profile, which removes the gap at the hinge side of the door throughout the opening and closing cycle.

This original, award-winning design means there is no opportunity for wandering fingers to be trapped, which is without doubt the best way to protect against accidents: total prevention.

Conventional retrofit hinge covers are known for their limited durability and typically fail every 6 to 12 months. This leads to regular replacements which can incur substantial costs throughout the life of the door.

Safehinge ALU is a durable solution to this issue. Installed once, it lasts the life of the door and will save 75% per door (equal to around a £500 saving per door) – over the life of a school or hospital.

Manchester City Council were replacing plastic hinge covers every 6 to 24 months so decided to invest £5,000 to use Safehinge ALU in one of their primary schools, estimating they would save £17,000 over the 25 year lifecycle of the building. Manchester City Council now specifies Safehinge as standard throughout all primary and SEN schools on a ‘spend-to-save’ basis.

MB Architectural is part of Macnaughton Blair’s Architectural Division which also consists of Lloyd Worrall in GB, Yannedis in London and MB Doorplan in ROI. Safehinge is available from all companies.
