Sika flexible roof system for state-of-the-art-school building

Sika-Trocal supplied the flexible, high-performance roof system for a spectacular secondary school building designed to nurture ‘hearts and minds’ of its student intake.

The £19 million Aureus School is a 1,200-capactiy secondary school for students in Didcot, Oxfordshire. The state-of-the-art facility includes a dance studio where yoga and mindfulness classes will be held to improve ‘holistic aspects’ of children’s education.

For the building’s main structure, it was crucial the roof system offered the optimum waterproof protection as well as being able to accommodate an array of details and an uneven concrete substrate. Sika-Trocal® Type S system was more than suitable for the task.

A total of 4,000m2 of Sika-Trocal® Type S was installed across two roofing areas at Aureus School. The main building’s roof contained an uneven concrete substrate, a challenge that was comfortably overcome with the homogenous, synthetic, single-ply Type S membrane. A rapid and economic solution, the system – selected by contractors Kier Construction – was installed during a 10-week programme by FCB Roofing.

Tony Comrie, Contracts Director at FCB Roofing, said: “Sika-Trocal® Type S system lends itself to accommodating roof details very easily. Unlike other membranes, it’s very forgiving. Kier Construction was so impressed with the look and performance of the system, not to mention its rapid-installation properties; they’ve asked us to install a system at another school in the area.”
