Stainless steel wire rope is made up of individual wires spun into a strand and has many different properties and benefits. A number of outer strands are closed over a central core, with the number of strands around this core determining the different constructions of wire and their unique characteristics.
The 1×19 construction is suitable for all types of general applications due to its low elasticity and high breaking load. 19 wires are twisted to form 1 strand. 1×19 is one of the most popular constructions and is typically used for yacht and sailboat rigging, balustrading and architectural projects. Compacted Strand wires feature high strength and very low stretch, providing excellent longevity and performance. During manufacturing the outer strands are compressed, resulting in a lower overall diameter, but increased strength. Compacted strand wire rope is commonly used when there is heavy lifting involved, requiring high breaking loads and/or repetitive bending.
The 7×7 construction provides good flexibility and is used throughout the marine industry and for general engineering applications. Some common uses include fall arrest lines, balustrading and guardrails wires, standing rigging, control cables and small wire rope slings. The 7×19 construction is the most flexible of the multi-strand wire ropes. Often used for its greater flexibility, 7×19 is suitable for garage or industrial door cables, gym cables, guy wires, catenary wire, winch ropes, lifting slings and all applications where the cable is required to run over a pulley.
