Tobermore is proud to be first to market in publishing EPDs for their paving, walling and kerb products. Following a rigorous Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), Tobermore can accurately demonstrate the environmental impact of over 400 products.
What are EPDs?
An EPD is a document that lays out the environmental performance or impact of a construction product or material over time.
EPDs allow architects to compare the environmental impact of different products and make informed decisions about which to specify for their project.
Using the data from an EPD assessment, Tobermore can reduce the impact of their products and deliver ever-more sustainable options for the industry.
Tobermore EPDs are valid until 2027 and are based on ISO standards (ISO 14025 and EN 15804+A2.).

How an EPD is created
An EPD is created in five stages:
1. Data is collected, including raw material, resource consumption and waste data for each product.
2. A lifecycle assessment is conducted.
3. Background information is collected for the report, giving details about the methodology used for the assessment, any assumptions made and the standards that have been adhered to.
4. Third-party verification is carried out by an independent verifier, to ensure impartiality, reliability and accuracy.
5. The EPD is published into the public domain.
The key factor is third-party verification of the EPD, which is a core part of the international standard that defines EPDs: ISO14025.
At Tobermore, all EPD certificates are verified by an approved independent verifier before being registered and published on the Irish Green Building Council EPD Portal.
