Tudor’s Plain Clay Tiles bring wow factor to Channel 4 featured home

A home featured on Channel 4 TV’s ‘Ugly House to Lovely House’ with George Clarke has been completely transformed thanks to the innovative use of traditional handmade clay plain tiles from Tudor Roof Tiles Co Ltd.

Chris Dyson Architects were commissioned to transform the 1960s house from being drab and box-like into a fresh and contemporary looking home.

The entire building was redesigned and wrapped in Tudor’s red ‘Medium Antique’ clay plain tiles, using their natural time weathered appearance and subtle variations of tone and texture to create a bold modern home.

By hanging the tiles vertically as cladding, the architects not only covered the aesthetic inconsistencies in the underlying brickwork, but also provided extra protection against wet weather conditions and direct sunlight as well as adding to the thermal insulation.

According to Chris Dyson: “Tudor’s tile cladding pulled the new and existing elements of the building together, whilst also presenting something entirely unique and fitting within its suburban context.”

Owners Lucas and Hayley Lepola were delighted with their remodelled four-bedroom family home and its contemporary use of traditional clay tiles.

“We found Tudor Roof Tile Ltd. to be terrific to work with. We couldn't be happier with the tiles themselves and, being handmade, each tile is completely unique and full of character. Given that the clay tile cladding is probably the most important detail of the project, we are very happy to have been able to work with Tudor Roof Tiles,” said Lucas Lepola.

Made from Etruria Marl clay, Tudor’s clay plain tiles are widely specified on traditional and listed buildings, as well as adding character to ultra-modern designs. Using age-old handmaking techniques, each tile is carefully hand-pressed, moulded and trimmed and then strengthened using advanced firing techniques, in order to give exceptional durability to modern performance standards.

The range is CE marked to EN 1304 (E) standards for frost resistance, water impermeability and flexural strength.
