Terramesh^® Family

Maccaferri

The Maccaferri Terramesh^® Family are used to construct Mechanically Stabilized Earth (MSE) structures and Reinforced Soil Slopes (RSS). There are three facing types and all are BBA Certified:

• Green Terramesh^® - vegetating facing for environmentally friendly slopes up to 70’
• Terramesh^® System – gabion facing for (up to) vertical structures
• Mineral Terramesh^® - welded wire with rock fill architectural facing for slopes up to 70’

The Terramesh^® family are BBA Certified with a design life of 120 years and are UKCA / CE marked. They offer numerous advantages compared to other reinforced soil slope systems:

• Factory pre-assembled units are ready to be erected and installed when they reach the job site.
• The geogrid soil reinforcement, fascia and lid (or upper grid) are all one continuous panel of mesh, requiring no cutting operations on site.
• Modular units save significant time during the construction phase
• No external formwork or shuttering; the units have supporting struts to hold the face at the correct angle during backfilling.

Normally the structural backfill is a granular material; the geogrid is sandwiched between layers of compacted backfill. However, at Maccaferri, we strive to re-use site-won materials as backfill to Terramesh^® units delivering cost and environmental benefits:

• Reduce quarried materials
• Reduce transportation of quarried materials
• Reduced site-won soils sent to landfill
• Cost savings and environmental improvements

Reusing site won fills requires the use of our ParaGrid^® geogrids due to their excellent interaction coefficients with site won fills. These are simply sandwiched between the layers of Terramesh^® units. No connections, bodkins or jointing is required, speeding up installation time and limiting potential installation errors on site.

Installation
Terramesh consists of pre-assembled units of double twisted wire mesh (8×10 type). The facing section of the unit is formed by connecting a back panel and diaphragms to the main fascia unit, creating the rectangular-shaped cells used for stone confinement. The geogrid reinforcement, fascia and lid are all one continuous panel of mesh. Terramesh^® units are supplied in standard lengths, requiring no cuts on site.

Following assembly on site, the fascia unit is filled with suitable gabion stone fill. Structural backfill is then placed upon the soil reinforcement geogrids and compacted. Subsequent Terramesh^® layers are placed onto the completed layer beneath.

Manufacture
All Terramesh® units are fabricated from high-quality Class A heavily galvanised steel wire with an additional polymeric coating, PoliMac^®. PoliMac^® is a revolutionary coating exclusive to Maccaferri that can withstand the increasingly aggressive environmental conditions brought on by global climate changes and offers significant advantages over traditional PVC coated wires; 10x resistance to abrasion, 2x resistance to chemical aggression 4x performance in cold weather and 4x resistance to UV rays.

Units are produced in Maccaferri's factories around the world and the management and production system in many of these is certified in compliance with ISO 9001.

Accreditation
Terramesh^® units are produced in compliance with CPR – Construction Product Regulation 305/2011, having EC marking in compliance with ETA-13/0295. The management and production system is certified in compliance with ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 (related to the environmental management system). It is also BBA HAPAS Certified.
