10 metre high Gilgen doors keep wind turbine pylon production moving

Gilgen Door Systems UK Ltd has provided TAG Energy Solutions with six enormous roller shutter doors for their new Offshore Renewable Development facility, Teesside.

Gilgen installed six 10 metre high, 8.5 metre wide, insulated roller shutters doors to the16, 000m² blast and paint facility of the Billingham site. The facility features two lanes, each sectioned off into two areas by three roller shutters. The two areas created enable the giant offshore wind turbine transition pieces to be sand blasted and then painted in two separate environments.

Sitting on the banks of the river Tees and facing the North Sea, the external doors were required to withstand high wind loading and were fitted with special guides by Gilgen to overcome this. The doors also feature 20mm foam filled lath that provides increased insulation and security.

Jeremy Speke, Build Manager for TAG said “The facility enables TAG to undertake large-scale shot blasting and painting operations in a technically advanced carbon friendly and controlled environment. The roller shutter doors supplied by Gilgen Door Systems form an integral part of this cutting edge facility for which we are rightly proud”

Paul Barson General Manager Gilgen Industrial Door Division said “The sheer size of the doors meant that this project needed to be approached in a different way; instead of being assembled barrel then lath by lath, each complete door and barrel was lifted in one go. We had to meet very stringent Health & Safety stipulations, set out by TAG to ensure site safety during the lift”
