22 Bishopsgate, London

22 Bishopsgate, London

22 Bishopsgate, the UK's second tallest skyscraper, is a 62-storey mixed-use development at the heart of London's financial district. Located on the eastern side of Bishopsgate, its position offers an enviable commute for the City's workforce with close transport links to Bank and Liverpool Street station. The landmark tower is not only known for its dizzying heights, standing 278 metres tall but is recognised as one of the most innovative and sustainable buildings in the country.

Designed by PLP Architecture, 22 Bishopsgate is the first of its kind to contain more than 100,000 sq. ft of integrated amenities and social spaces, creating an inspiring, healthy, and energising workplace for a vibrant and diverse workforce. The iconic building is a welcome addition to the City's skyline and has set a gold standard for multi-tenant architecture and environmentally friendly design.

MAINTAINING A SAFE AND SECURE ENVIRONMENT
22 Bishopsgate is expected to accommodate a community of up to 12,000 occupiers and visitors. In the event of an incident or evacuation, a highly-reliable entrance security solution was required to ensure the safety and protection of the building's community. The specification called for unobtrusive, slimline speed gates to help maximise throughput while providing effective protection against tailgating.

Early in the design process, it was understood that throughput and adaptability were crucial considerations for the project; therefore, understanding the building type and estimated capacity was indicative of the number of turnstiles and the type of configuration required. During the initial discussions, the client highlighted that easy integration with third-party access control systems and biometric devices was necessary, as it provides a secure solution for granting access and mitigating unauthorised entry.

SLIMLINE SPEED GATES SECURE EVERY ENTRANCE
Inside 22 Bishopsgate, Boon Edam installed 28 Lifeline Speedlane Swings at multiple entry points throughout the building, including the foyer, lift lobby, back entrance, and cycle parking area. In total, 8 banks of Lifeline Speedlane Swings were installed across the Lobby and Level 1, with each bank consisting of three single-wing lanes and a double-wing lane for wide access. The positioning and configuration of the new speed gates ahead of the lift lobby and escalators helped form a secure barrier to prevent unwanted intruders from accessing other areas within the building.

Advanced anti-tailgating and anti-climbing sensors are built into each cabinet to offer maximum protection against unauthorised access. As a result, building management and security are immediately notified of unauthorised breaches, enabling immediate action to be taken against potential threats. Furthermore, as per the specification, all speed gates at 22 Bishopsgate are fully-equipped with opt-in facial recognition, QR scanners and proximity card readers to ensure a high level of authentication.

The Lifeline Speedlane Swings are finished in satin stainless steel with a seamless black glass top to blend with the building's modern and vibrant interior. The newly installed speed gates have proven ideal for employees and visitors. As for the client, it is an entrance control solution which has successfully exceeded the security and design expectations.

A SUSTAINABLE SOLUTION TO ENTRANCE CONTROL
With thousands of employees and visitors entering the building daily, the entrance doors play an essential role in maintaining a comfortable environment and welcoming atmosphere. Revolving doors are well-known for being one of the most energy-efficient entrance solutions available and were a 'must-have' for 22 Bishopsgate.

Boon Edam supplied and installed 9 Crystal Tourniket automatic revolving doors at the East, North and South entrances. The specification called for a three-wing configuration to provide better accessibility for occupants and to reliably support high traffic flow during busier periods. These stunning revolving doors are constructed entirely from glass with a slim satin stainless-steel frame to complement the speed gate aesthetics.

EXCLUSIVE AFTERCARE
After opening its doors in late 2020, 22 Bishopgate’s building management identified that a few modifications were required to optimise the functionality of the turnstiles. To ensure a safe, quick exit in the event of an evacuation, Boon Edam installed emergency break glass within proximity to each bank of turnstiles within the main lobby. For added security, Boon Edam retrofitted each turnstile with alarm sounders to quickly alert security or personnel of an attempted breach. In addition, remote fobs were programmed with each wide lane so that personnel could easily open/close the lanes for wheelchair access or a large goods delivery.
