Acton Town, London

Client: BP Howard
Type of works: supplied surface mounted platform tiles

Specialist civil engineering and rail contractor BP Howard has recently completed the installation of Visul Systems' surface mounted platform tiles at Acton Town Tube Station, London.

Acton Town, opened in 1897, is situated on both Piccadilly and District tubelines and welcomes over 5,500,000 commuters every year. The need to comply with stringent DDA regulations quickly and effectively meant Visul’s surface mounted edge system was chosen as the preferred solution.

The tiles manufactured by Visul Systems evolved from the need to create a high performance surface mounted tactile system and the gap in the market for a consistent retrofit tactile product. Visul’s range of surface mounted edge systems has a number of benefits which include:

• Surface excavation not always required
• Outperforms concrete 7 times in wear testing
• High anti slip properties
• Rapid curing application
• No heavy duty plant required

The constraints of the contract demands that all works on the platform had to be carried out within a full weekend closure often utilising up to six operatives. Specialist contractor BP Howard successfully applied 300 polyurethane tiles to each of the 120 metre long platforms.

BP Howard’s Contracts Manager, Terry Palmer, said “the rapid curing properties of the tiles and adhesive allowed us to complete the scheme of works in 52 hours to the complete satisfaction of the client."

Visul’s Marketing Manager, Ross Carty briefly explained “correct application is vital with this kind of product to ensure longevity, hence the use of an approved specialist.”

The need for fast, effective, hard wearing tactile solutions with an excellent track record means Visul Systems is the client’s first choice when specifying tactile paving solutions.
