Aggregate Industries help brighten Peterborough's highways with eco-schools design competition

A Peterborough schoolboy has seen his design emblazoned across a tipper truck as part of a competition for youngsters to help promote the decarbonisation of our highways.

Construction and pavement specialists, Aggregate Industries Surfacing Solutions joined forces with their client Milestone Infrastructure and Peterborough Environment City Trust (PECT) to run a competition asking primary school pupils to come up with a design promoting low carbon solutions.

As sponsors of an annual ECO Schools event organised by PECT in Peterborough in May 2022, Aggregate Industries and Milestone were both very impressed with the presentations and children’s creativity at the event and so decided to offer them a chance to win a unique prize.

Working with PECT, school children were challenged to come up with a design that both companies could use across social media, posters and site vehicles under a shared low carbon ambition and Milestones’ slogan ‘Lets go zero on our highways!’

With over 100 entries from pupils across Peterborough schools, it was 10-year-old Aprameya Ghosh design of St Augustine’s Primary School that caught the judge’s attention.

CGI Creative Graphics International were engaged to blow up and wrap Aprameya’s design onto a tipper truck operated by Witherley Services - an Aggregate Industries company that operates in the region and sticker up site welfare and caddy vans operated by both companies.

Colin Witham, Framework Manager for Aggregate Industries’ Surfacing Solutions division, said: “As a company, sustainability and decarbonising the construction industry are huge priorities for us.

“We have worked with PECT for a number of years as part of our environmental commitment and previously sponsored ECO Schools events. We came up with the idea of a competition for schools and we thought that would be an amazing way to engage young people and get them thinking about their environment.”

Heidi Latronico-Ferris from PECT said: “It was such a unique opportunity to have offered the students and something that I am sure Aprameya will remember for a long time. It is great to see the sustainability message being worked towards and shared in this industry, everyone
involved has done an amazing job to make this happen.

“Without the support of organisation’s like these we wouldn’t be able to offer schools and more importantly the next generation these experiences to make our world a more sustainable place.”

Gary Williams, of Milestone, said: “Having just joined the Peterborough contract it is great to see the support we provided to PECT with the Eco Awards last year and being invited to the presentation is a privilege and a great start to 2023 as I commence my new role. It is great to see students taking part in extra work at school relating to the environment and showcasing their work on these vehicle’s and sets a positive environmental precedent for the future generations. Keep up all the hard work.”

Sarah Grange, from St Augustine’s Junior School, said: “It’s such a wonderful opportunity for the children to create an ecological design that will be seen across the country.”

Aprameya Ghosh was asked what his family thought of his winning design. He said: “They are amazed and so am I. I am looking forward to seeing my design on the side of vehicles around Peterborough."

The collaboration is part of Aggregate Industries’ wider community work in Peterborough, where it is part of the city’s Highways Framework, constructing and maintaining city roads and pavements.
