Aliva UK wins third prestigious award for bespoke terracotta project

The third time’s a charm for Aliva UK’s stunning bespoke terracotta project in Brighton.

Already double award-winning, the customised terracotta facade at Brighton University’s School of Business and Law has been recognised with a third prestigious award.

The signature facade on Elm House took the winners’ crown in the Business Awards UK’s Construction and Engineering Awards 2024 in the Innovation in Construction Materials category.

The facade takes its architectural inspiration from murmurations of starlings that take flight over Brighton’s iconic Pier.

Six different types of white, handmade, geometric glazed tiles in matt, gloss and semi-gloss finishes were used to create the stunning aesthetic.

And as it is made of 100% clay, the terracotta cladding was a super sustainable choice.

Aliva worked with architect Hassell to create the aesthetic. The client’s ambition was to create a striking, clean and natural façade to ensure the building took centre stage in the University’s new Moulsecoomb Campus.

From a functional perspective, the facade solution needed to be economical, easy to install, durable, low maintenance and weather resistant.

Aliva’s design solution involved a custom ceramic veil frame which wraps around the new building from level two upwards. The frame supports 3,120m2 of white 3D tiles. A total of 50,000 geometric glazed clay tiles have been installed to deliver an organic, sustainable and cost-efficient solution.

The judges said: "On behalf of Business Awards UK, we’re delighted to congratulate the Aliva UK and Hassell team for winning the 'Innovation in Construction Materials' category with their Elm House project at the University of Brighton.

“Your pioneering work on the bespoke 3D cladding, inspired by the flight of starlings over Brighton Pier, highlights your commitment to innovation, with the use of sustainable materials displaying your dedication to the environment. This achievement sets a new standard in architectural design, demonstrating what can be achieved through creativity and collaboration, a very well-deserved win.”

The project has already received international recognition in the FX Design Awards and the Facade Awards UK.
