Alumasc Rainwater Solutions for Sustainable Development

Alumasc Rainwater Solutions for Sustainable Development

Alumasc has supplied a package of its market-leading rainwater products for a huge Eco-development at Upton, Northampton. The project, which is a partnership between Northampton BC, English Partnerships and The Prince’s Foundation, is an eight year scheme to extend the town in a way that demonstrates best practice in sustainable urban growth.

Alumasc worked closely with the contractor, Northants Rainwater, to provide a drainage system which met both the visual and performance aspirations of the masterplan and Upton Design Code drawn up by EDAW AECOM, the urban design and planning consultant.

Alumasc’s Aqualine extruded aluminium gutter system was specified for its high-capacity drainage capabilities, whilst complementing the architectural character of the buildings with a sleek and sophisticated appearance. Secret-fix bracketry allows a smooth, uniform cross section along the whole length of the gutter, giving a completely clean external appearance. All weather dry-jointing and full provision for thermal movement between gutter parts and the structure to which they are fixed ensures a precision installation.

A Flushjoint downpipe system was also used to continue the seamless appearance of the guttering. Heavy-grade extruded aluminium pipes have flush joints based on concealed spigots, whilst pipes and fittings are mounted on brackets to stand clear of the structure.

Apex Heritage cast-iron gutters and downpipes provided the complete Alumasc rainwater solution where a more traditional appearance was required on the development. This modern cast-iron system was chosen for its historical integrity and proven performance. All products are available in a range of profiles and sizes with complementary accessories, a new pre-finished option is also available, finished in Satin Black as standard, with other colours to order, the pre-finished range offers estimated savings of around 60%.

Due to the principles of creating a sustainable community at Upton, a key factor in the specification of Alumasc rainwater products was that they are all 100% recyclable. Once complete, the development will comprise approx 1,020 BREAAM-rated EcoHomes, together with a primary school, medical centre, local community centre and a mix of offices, retail and work units.

Architects for the project were Franklin Ellis of Nottingham and Bill Dunster Architects, the main contractor was Mansell Construction Services Ltd, also of Nottingham.
