Alumasc Roofing Hydrotech Hot Melt used at National Trust Visitor Centre

Alumasc’s Hydrotech Hot Melt Waterproofing System has been used on the roof of the new National Trust Visitor Centre at the world-famous Giant’s Causeway in Northern Ireland.

Created by architects Heneghan Peng, the brand new Visitor Centre is part of an £18.5m investment at the site and boasts a striking design, inspired by the bold material and geometric lines of the Causeway itself.

The tried and trusted Hydrotech system which has had zero product failures in over 50 years of use worldwide was specified by main contractor Gilbert Ash and installed by GBS Roofing of County Down. Covering a total of 1800m2, Hydrotech provided seamless waterproofing ideal for highly detailed schemes such as this.

Commenting on the project, Chris Pegg from GBS Roofing, said “Using Hydrotech was a major advantage when it came to dealing with the unpredictable weather conditions that exist on such high ground right on the coast. Most waterproofing products need to be installed in one go, but the versatile nature of Hydrotech, meant it was ideal for the stop/start nature of the installation, due to the heavy rain and 40mph winds.

“We’ve been working with Alumasc for over twenty years, and always find major benefits when installing their products. The Visitor Centre was a success for all concerned and we look forward to many more successful projects in the future.”

The National Trust’s Visitor Centre was recently shortlisted for the 2013 Royal Institute of British Architects' Stirling Prize, described by RIBA president, Angela Brady, as "genuinely courageous in laying out a new visionary approach."

Alumasc’s Hydrotech hot melt system is perfectly suited for zero falls applications on inverted green roofs and hard landscaped podium structures in new build applications and is manufactured using 10% post-consumer recycled material. Hydrotech is BBA accredited and has European Technical Approval.
