Alumasc Water Management Solutions (AWMS) has proudly contributed to the transformation of The Joshua Tree in Cheshire, as featured on the BBC’s DIY SOS: The Big Build Children in Need Special. The ambitious charity project brought together hundreds of volunteers, contractors, and suppliers to create a state-of-the-art extension for a much-loved local charity supporting families affected by childhood cancer.
Alumasc supplied its high-performance Infinity Steel rainwater system and Skyline Architectural Aluminium Copings, providing a sleek, modern aesthetic, with the benefit of rapid delivery essential for the success of the time-critical build.
The Joshua Tree was founded in 2006 by Dai and Lynda Hill. The charity provides tailored support to children and their families living with the life-changing impact of childhood cancer. Over time, the charity’s work had expanded far beyond its original base in Sandiway, Cheshire, and the existing building could no longer meet demand.
Working alongside BBC Children in Need and an army of volunteers, The DIY SOS team undertook the extraordinary challenge of delivering a new extension in just ten days. This has created much-needed additional therapy rooms, activity spaces, and outdoor facilities for children and their families.
The project schedule was driven by the tight ten-day filming period, making speed of product delivery and ease of installation absolutely key. Alumasc’s Infinity Steel rainwater system and Skyline Coping solutions both combine fast availability with elegant design and proven performance; helping to ensure the new building met both its functional and aesthetic goals.
Infinity Steel Rainwater System
Alumasc’s Infinity Rainwater range was specified for The Joshua Tree’s contemporary design brief. Manufactured using advanced materials technology, the system offers a durable, corrosion-resistant and visually striking alternative to traditional uPVC rainwater goods. Available in ZMS-coated steel, galvanised, quartz zinc, natural zinc, and copper, Infinity complements both modern and traditional architecture, making it ideal for the project’s blend of warmth and style.
For The Joshua Tree, Infinity was supplied in galvanised steel, providing enhanced protection, UV resistance (RUV-4) and a refined finish. The range’s half-round and box gutter profiles offer high flow rates and smooth performance, while circular downpipes complete the clean, minimal look.
All components are manufactured to ISO 9001:2015 and ISO 14001:2015 standards, guaranteeing consistent quality and environmental responsibility. Infinity is 100% recyclable and supplied with warranties of up to 20 years, depending on finish and site conditions. Its lightweight design ensured quick installation; a crucial advantage on such a fast-paced build.
Skyline Architectural Aluminium Copings
Alumasc’s Skyline Copings were equally integral to the project’s final result. Skyline Copings are a maintenance-free capping system for parapet walls, providing a sleek architectural line whilst protecting the building fabric beneath. The system’s snap-fix bracket design avoids penetration of the capping itself, preventing water ingress, allowing ventilation over the top of the wall and contributing to long-term building integrity.
Skyline Copings are independently tested for wind uplift in accordance with EOTA TR005, offering assured performance even in challenging conditions. The system offers a life expectancy exceeding 40 years in rural and suburban environments, and over 25 years in industrial or marine areas.
Skyline’s ease of installation and quick site handling were invaluable at The Joshua Tree, helping the on-site teams stay on schedule. Standard sizes are held in stock meaning Alumasc could respond immediately to supply requests, ensuring no time was lost during the crucial final stages of construction.
The end result is a building that not only functions efficiently but also presents a contemporary, comfortable, and welcoming space for everyone using it. Alumasc’s products played a key part in achieving the architectural vision, complementing the modern aesthetic whilst delivering lasting protection and performance that will help The Joshua Tree provide essential care long into the future.
The transformation and big reveal were filmed for BBC One’s DIY SOS, which aired on 13th November 2025, and is now available to stream on BBC iPlayer.
