Effective water management has become a critical challenge in modern infrastructure. As rainfall patterns intensify and urban development expands, engineers are increasingly tasked with ensuring that watercourses are safely and efficiently diverted through roads, railways and built environments.
Poundfield Precast’s bespoke precast concrete culverts are helping clients across the UK to deliver long-lasting, high-performance systems that manage water flow reliably and sustainably. In infrastructure projects, time is one of the most valuable resources. Every day saved on site can reduce costs, minimise disruption and bring projects into service sooner. Poundfield’s bespoke precast concrete box culverts are designed with this in mind, offering exceptional installation speed without compromising on quality or performance.
Fast installation, real programme gains
The greatest advantage of precast construction is its speed of installation. Poundfield’s box culverts are manufactured at its factory in Suffolk and delivered to site ready for immediate placement, eliminating the need for formwork, curing and lengthy in-situ processes. Each unit arrives as a complete structural component – dimensionally precise, reinforced and ready to go. This makes installation a straightforward sequence of lifting, aligning, sealing and backfilling, allowing large runs of culvert to be installed in a fraction of the time required for traditional methods. For contractors working to tight schedules, this speed of installation can make a critical difference. Faster construction means shorter programme durations, reduced labour costs and less disruption to the public.
Building resilience at Toddbrook Reservoir
A recent major infrastructure scheme to benefit from Poundfield’s precast culverts was the restoration project Toddbrook Reservoir in Derbyshire.
When unusually heavy rainfall hit the UK in August 2019, the auxiliary spillway at the site was damaged. Emergency responders leapt into action, evacuating around 1,500 homes in nearby Whaley Bridge to keep local people safe. At the same time, RAF Chinook helicopters dropped more than 400 bags of aggregate onto the dam to stabilise the damaged section and prevent further issues.
During the emergency, more than a billion litres of water were pumped from the reservoir, protecting the structure and safeguarding nearby homes and businesses. Toddbrook remained at -12m below top water level over the following years while the Canal and River Trust and the Kier Group carried out extensive work to repair the important structure.
Poundfield Precast’s role
Poundfield supplied 12 precast concrete box culverts, each measuring 1.8m x 1.8m and weighing around 3.2 tonnes. A debris screen and two end sections of culvert were also manufactured, one of which connected to a headwall to allow the Todd Brook to flow into a tumble bay which was constructed as part of the drawdown structure during the rebuild. The second abutted the new tumble bay.
All of the culverts supplied by Poundfield were specially designed to be able to endure seismic events to add an extra layer of safety. They can also be submerged under up to 6.1m of water, in turn allowing them to withstand the pressure levels caused by reservoir water levels.
The culverts were joined together using waterproof ‘dog and bone’ connection joints, which were designed by Poundfield’s engineers and approved by the Canal and River Trust. As per regulations, the new dam spillway – including the elements supplied by Poundfield – was then inspected by a government-appointed qualified civil engineer to allow the gradual refill of Toddbrook Reservoir, which began in April 2026.
Creating longevity and safeguarding the future
The huge rebuild project at Toddbrook Reservoir has breathed new life into this important resource. Once the refill is complete, the landmark will once again become a haven for walking, watersports and wildlife, while providing water to the Peak Forest canal, in turn feeding the wider canal network.
Using high-quality, durable precast concrete supplied by Poundfield Precast in its construction will significantly increase the reservoir’s resilience against extreme weather, in turn ensuring its longevity for years to come.
Built to last
Each culvert supplied by Poundfield Precast is designed for decades of service, resisting corrosion, abrasion and environmental wear. The combination of strength, precision and durability ensures lasting reliability – a structure that can be installed quickly yet performs for generations.
Poundfield’s bespoke box culverts offer an ideal combination of speed, strength and reliability. By moving complexity off-site and delivering precision-engineered components that can be installed quickly and safely, they help contractors achieve tighter programmes and more predictable outcomes.
