The construction industry has seen a lot of news on the Future Homes Standard and SAP 10 since they were announced and there are big implications for how homes are heated when they are implemented.
Low carbon heating which includes heat pumps, alternative heat networks and direct electric heating will play a huge role when it comes to regulatory compliance and moving towards the net-zero carbon target. This is due to their low-carbon emission factor. This is something that has also been highlighted in the latest SAP 10 iterations. For example, slashing the carbon emission factor of electricity to 0.136 kgCO2/kWh from 0.519 kgCO2/kWh which makes electric heating a seriously viable option for new builds and retrofitting alike.
This may influence the construction method used to build residential developments. This could include an increase in more modular offsite construction such as bathroom pods which lends itself to electric underfloor heating because it can be easily installed offsite and ‘plugged in’ when onsite. We have already seen this in projects such as the conversion of BBC Television Centre where 745 bathrooms were installed in a plug ‘n’ play style.
