Boon Edam Completes Large Retrofit Project at One Canada Square

Boon Edam Completes Large Retrofit Project at One Canada Square

London, UK – 22nd May 2023 – Boon Edam Limited, a global manufacturer in architectural revolving doors and security entrances, has completed a landmark project at One Canada Square, one of London's most iconic buildings. As part of an ongoing lobby refurbishment, Canary Wharf Management opted to modernise the building's original revolving doors to increase performance and improve the overall experience for tenants and visitors.

The refurbishment included retrofitting nine hydraulic-assisted revolving doors, which were installed in the late 1980s, with a more advanced and efficient system. Following a rigorous tender process, Canary Wharf Management appointed Boon Edam as the trusted partner to complete the retrofit due to their extensive knowledge and proven ability to find innovative solutions to complex challenges.

The project presented significant challenges for Boon Edam as it involved retrofitting doors that were not originally manufactured or installed by them. The doors also feature a unique bullnose glass design, which gives the appearance that the doors seamlessly blend with the façade. Boon Edam's experts were tasked with delivering a solution that would modernise the existing doors while preserving the historical structure and aesthetics. To address these challenges, Boon Edam produced detailed drawings, visuals and material finishes to help bring Canary Wharf Management's vision to life.

Boon Edam's solution was multifaceted and required careful planning and coordination. The project was phased over a series of weekends to avoid disrupting the building's daily operations. The entry experts worked closely with Canary Wharf Management and the various subcontractors to create a detailed programme and coordinate logistics to ensure that all aspects of the project were completed seamlessly and that each installation went smoothly.

To upgrade the operation of the doors, the team needed to install a new drive and control box. Typically, the drive and control are installed beneath the door; however, it was not possible at One Canada Square due to the high-quality and expensive marble flooring that runs throughout the lobby. Instead, Boon Edam designed a canopy extension to provide the space required for the upgrade. This allowed each door to be retrofitted to fully automatic operation. The additional space also allowed Boon Edam to install Instant Lockdown to enhance security and enable building management to quickly and easily secure the revolving doors at the push of a button.

With up to 10,000 people entering the lobby each day, all upgrades needed to comply with the latest British Safety Standards. As a result, Boon Edam installed new state-of-the-art features, including sensors, buffers, and emergency stop buttons, to comply with EN 16005 and to improve safety and accessibility for building occupants and visitors.

To achieve the desired aesthetics, Boon Edam's team installed new, custom-made doorsets that are designed with larger profiles than a traditional Boon Edam revolving door. By increasing the size of the profiles, they achieved a high-quality finish, which aligns perfectly with the existing design. In addition, their experts went over and above to ensure the new canopy and profiles matched the original mirror stainless-steel finish. While this process took multiple attempts to get right, the results truly speak for themselves. The extended canopy and door profiles seamlessly blend with the building's exterior and meet the high standards set by Canary Wharf Management.

"We are delighted to have successfully delivered a custom solution that exceeded the client's expectations," said Kelly Richardson, National Service Sales Manager at Boon Edam Limited.

"Our attention to detail and expertise in coordination, logistics and installation allowed for a seamless retrofit that was completed on schedule and with minimal disruption to the building's daily operations."

"This project is a testament to our expertise in finding innovative solutions to complex challenges through retrofitting. It also demonstrates our commitment to providing custom solutions that cater to the unique needs of each project."

Following the success of the project, Canary Wharf Management opted into a premium maintenance agreement to ensure the new automatic doors remain in top condition. The agreement provides a 4-hour response time, out-of-hours servicing and one scheduled service visit per year. In addition, Canary Wharf Management invested in on-site critical spares to minimise downtime in the event of a breakdown.
