Business and Intellectual Property Centre, British Library, London

Client: The British Library
Type of works: supply and installation of Lumisty MFX 1515 view-control film.

March 2006 saw the opening of the new Business and Intellectual Property Centre at the British Library, a new resource centre for entrepreneurs. Traditional reading rooms were remodelled and transformed into an impressive suite of modern meeting rooms with state-of-the-art facilities. An important part of the design was to provide controlled privacy for people working in the meeting rooms.

Solar Shield was commissioned to resolve the problems associated with privacy and view control, and specified Lumisty MFX 1515. A state-of-the-art new view-control film which changes from transparent to translucent, and vice versa, depending on the angle from which it is viewed, eliminating the fishbowl atmosphere of the glass conference rooms, whilst allowing sufficient light transmission into the building.

From a frontal direction visibility is distorted, and the glass area appears translucent providing privacy to people working inside the suite. When viewed from a vertical direction visibility is clear, allowing staff and visitors to see when the rooms are in use.

The installation was carried out with minimal disruption to staff and visitors at the centre by one team of applicators, over a one-week period. The film also carries a manufacturer's warranty of 10 years.

There are four types of view control films for application to glass available, each offering different invisible ranges in the horizontal and vertical direction.

Lumisty is ideal for:

  • drawing attention to products within retail or exhibition displays
  • blocking out unsightly views but highlighting skyline
  • eliminating the fishbowl atmosphere of a glass conference room or workspace
  • providing controlled privacy and security to sensitive areas
  • modesty screening on glazed balustrades, elevated walkways or stairwells
  • logos and signs which appear and disappear as you pass by, lending greater impact corporate messages or logos.
