Natural and mechanical smoke ventilation systems provided at a new residential development
Project
Burlington Square is a new, high quality apartment scheme located south of Manchester City Centre.
The building comprises of 273 apartments over nine storeys with ground floor communal facilities, commercial units and communal rooftop areas.
System
D+H UK worked with Domis Construction to supply and install natural and mechanical smoke ventilation systems at Burlington Square.
All four blocks of the residential scheme link at the lower floors and have three staircases between them. Each staircase has an AOV (automatically opening vent) at its head.
Each corridor that provides access to a staircase is smoke vented via an AOV, except for the fifth and seventh floor, where mechanical smoke extract systems are in place.
Stair AOVs will operate on smoke detection within the corridor, drawing smoke out. Simultaneously, inlet AOVs will bring in fresh, clean replacement air.
Mechanical extract fans are located at the end of the corridors remote from the stairs. AOVs provide inlet air whilst the extract fans run to draw the smoke away from the stairs and out of the corridor.
The basement car park has also been provided with a mechanical smoke extract system.
D+H UK's solution is capable of quickly and efficiently removing smoke and poisonous gasses from the communal spaces, keeping corridors and stairs clear for firefighters in the event of a fire.
