Castle Quay, Bedford

Contractor: CA Single Ply
Type of works: installation of Sika-Trocal green roof system.

Castle Quay is a contemporary development in the heart of Bedford’s new cultural quarter, an area that includes a number of bar/cafe/restaurant units. To reduce the impact of the development on the environment, a proven green roof system was selected using the Sika-Trocal Concept.

Architects and specifiers are increasingly constrained by planning regulations that limit discharge consents and require protection of biodiversity in urban areas. Green roofs are providing an interesting and environmentally conscious solution to these requirements, meeting high-priority local authority concerns, while creating colourful and vibrant developments, such as this one at Castle Quay.

For the green roof on Castle Quay, the main contractor turned to experienced Sika-Trocal licensed contractor CA Single Ply, who worked with Greenfix SkyGarden. This ensured that both experts in roofing and horticulture would work together to install a growing medium-based green roofing system over a Sika-Trocal Type SGmA membrane in a warm roof construction.

Tim Clark, National Sales Manager for Sika-Trocal comments: “This was another great project by CA Single Ply and adds to the number of green roofs that we’ve been involved in. Over 10 years ago we put one of the first biodiverse green roofs on the Laban Dance Centre in London, a project that will be the subject of a joint biodiversity study with Livingroofs.org in the New Year.“
