Cedar helps make holiday homes highly desirable

James Latham, the UK's biggest independent timber and panel product distributor, recently supplied 880m2 of Western Red Cedar which was used to clad four luxury holiday homes in Talland, South East Cornwall. The Bay, Talland, between Looe & Polperro in Cornwall, provides a rare opportunity to own a contemporary home with direct access to the breathtaking and dramatic Cornish coastline. Here, it was decided that four holiday homes were to be developed that as well as being highly desirable, needed to stand up to the South Coast of England’s unpredictable climate, while at the same time, enhance the already beautiful landscape.

To achieve this, working with the team at Bay Talland Associates, Mador designed the buildings to incorporate wooden cladding in their construction, surrounded with large terraces to take advantage of the views over the bay. After considering a number of options and materials, Western Red Cedar was selected which was machined to a special tongue and groove cladding profile. One of the main reasons it was chosen was for its durability as well as its ability to retain an attractive appearance when weathered. An additional factor in the decision was that the timber lengths needed to be over 3.3m to avoid butt joints which would spoil the façade’s natural look and feel.

Commenting on James Latham, Nick Wilson of Talland Homes Associates said, “We needed to find a company that was large enough to not only provide the long lengths of Western Red Cedar directly from stock, but one that was able to take care of the machining and adhere to quick turnarounds, as well as offering technical expertise. James Latham more than fitted the bill and we will have no hesitation in contacting them again for future projects.”
