Cembrit polishes up modern housing in Westerland

Cembrit’s A+ rated Westerland slates have been installed on a prominent Cavanna Homes development in Plymouth. The seventy two properties and their respective garages provide low maintenance and energy efficient dwellings and are situated within close proximity to the city centre on the South Devon coastline. 74,000 of Cembrit’s 600mm x 300mm Westerland graphite slates were used at the Cobham Field development to provide a sleek and polished finish, complementing the modern design.

The name ‘Cobham Field’ is inspired by ground breaking English aviator Sir Alan Cobham, who was a pioneer of long distance air travel. The new private homes benefit from contemporary design and fittings, as well as solar panel installations, PVC-u double glazed windows and a ten year NHBC Buildmark Warranty. All of the seventy two properties at the Cobham Field site feature Cembrit’s Westerland Graphite slates, which were specified by the local planner, as the perfect roofing material for the project. JB Roofing Services Ltd, based in Tavistock, Devon, was in charge of the roofing work and installed the slate.

“Cembrit’s Westerland slate was a perfect choice for the Cobham Fields project.” Says Nick Brown from JB Roofing Services. “Although the installation was straight forward, there was some steep pitch inclined work together with a degree of vertical slating, as well as extensive lead work to numerous bay and oriel windows. The Westerland slates were the ideal material for the development and we were impressed with the high quality together with the simplicity of installation.”

Westerland slate has an appearance very close to that of natural slate. Its attractive riven surface and natural dressed edges make it a true alternative for applications where a traditional appearance is important. It is manufactured to the highest European standards and is lightweight, pre-holed, and suitable for all types of projects. The slate is easy to handle and install, like all Cembrit fibre cement products the slate can be cut with simple hand tools. Fibre cement is durable and a real economic alternative to natural roofing materials.

Westerland slates are manufactured using Portland cement together with a formulation of superior blended synthetic and cellulose fibres. Westerland slates are pigmented during production and are fully compressed. They are finished with a high quality, semi-matt acrylic coloured coating to the top face and edges and a tinted, high performance binder to the back face. Cembrit fibre-cement slates are fully accredited and guaranteed.
