Westerland slate from Cembrit is providing the perfect finishing touch to an award-winning retirement village in Northampton. Built by Castleoak, one of the UK leaders in the design and construction of care homes, Richmond Village features Westerland slate across the whole development.
Located at Grange Park, Northampton, the development is a luxury retirement village comprising 51 one- and two-bedroom apartments, 42 care suites and communal facilities including a restaurant, hairdressing salon, lounges, a shop, a café, an arts and craft room and an IT room and library. Built in attractive, New England-style, the design is complemented perfectly by Cembrits Westerland slate. Following a tender process Westerland was approved for use by the local planning authority due to its matt appearance and graphite shades and authentic looking texture. Almost 50,000 Westerlands were installed by Walthamstow-based Court Roofing.
Westerland slate has an appearance very close to that of natural slate. Its attractive riven surface and natural dressed edges make it an ideal solution for projects where traditional appearance and modern performance need combining. Westerland is manufactured to the highest European standards and is lightweight, pre-holed for easy installation and is a durable, conomic alternative to natural roofing materials. Westerland slate is manufactured using Portland cement together with a non-asbestos formulation of superior blended synthetic
and cellulose fibres. The slates are pigmented during production, fully compressed and then finished with a high quality, semi-matt acrylic coating to the top face and edges, with a tinted, high performance binder to the back face.
Westerland slate is manufactured in accordance with a quality assurance system to BS EN ISO 9001: 2000 and to the requirements of BS EN 492: 2004 product specification for fibre cement slates and their fittings. The slate has been awarded the BBA Certificate No. 03/4041 and is manufactured in a factory which complies with the requirements of BS EN ISO 14001: 2004, and has been awarded BVQI Certificate No.172000.
Using skills built up over 80 years, Cembrit select natural slate from Spain, Canada, Brazil, China, India and the countries of Western Europe. Quality levels at Group factories are rigorously maintained to high standards with fibre cement slates produced to BS EN 492:2004 and manufactured under the control of a BS EN ISO 9001: 2000 quality management system. Furthermore the company operates an environmental management system to ISO 14001:1996.
